Hello All who Ever came to this site:

I know I had high hopes for this site, and I then went missing in the world of things to do to make it happen, but now the parts are starting to come together. I am beginning the process of revamping the site to be not just a blog, but I will be creating more videos from my trip around Europe.

For the past few weeks I have been interviewing and exploring the lives of people in London and Milan for Dutiee.com as I am working on this site with Deepa. The idea of making news more engaging and creating a space for people to read news around social innovation sparked caused me to become a risk-taker again and embark int he project of capturing the lives of social innovators and entrepreneurs around Europe and hopefully soon Africa and Asia too.

A message from a friend:

As some of you know, I am currently in Tshwane (Pretoria) South Africa. I am on fellow status from Brown Medical School for the year as I am pursuing clinical research in HIV and the developing world under the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation International Clinical Research Fellowship. Under the supervision of physicians from Yale School of Medicine and University of Pretoria, I am studying ways to improve delivery of and adherence to Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission (PMTCT) to improve outcomes for the mother-infant pair.

My own project here is to establish an intervention which uses text messaging (SMS) as a means for social networking among HIV positive pregnant women in South Africa. This intervention is designed with the understanding that HIV-positive women in South Africa face psychosocial factors and social isolation which make adherence to medication and PMTCT logistically difficult, as well as emotionally challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to provide women with support in order for these efforts to be effective. Basically, I will be running a support group which functions solely by way of SMS messaging in order to overcome the limitations of traditional “onsite” support groups in resource poor settings.

Ultimately, the goal of this intervention is to increase adherence to Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) programs by providing women with ongoing social support during the most critical period of their pregnancy. This phase of my research is to create, implement and carry out the SMS-groups to provide evidence that the intervention is feasible and expandable. If I am successful, we will expand the intervention to more thoroughly evaluate its effectiveness at promoting PMTCT adherence and improving outcomes.

Please consider donating your old mobile phone to my project. I need 20 phones by the end of November and the project is likely to move beyond this so your phone will continue to be utilized for worthy purposes. The phones need to function using a SIM card (which should be all US operators except Sprint.) If you have a charger with the phone, that is great. If not, don’t worry, I still can use the phone. Phones can be given to Jason Lambrese (if you are in Providence, RI) to my mother or sent to her (Susan Lach, [address has been omitted for internet security], Plymouth, MN 55446) or contact me and we can figure something else out.

Remember: anything is helpful during this (very low budget) feasibility phase of my project!

Bastille Day: Lemonade Party & Discussion

Took my First Action and took Halo Breast Test

I posted this on my FB, but wanted to share on here. Today I took my first test using the new unit that allows for a non-invasive way of detecting early risks of breast cancer in women that are under 40. This test is a detection type that shows if you have mutating cells. If this is seen, then it allows doctors to provide you with information of how you can prevent breast cancer from occurring and allows them to monitor your cells early on so that they can catch and help reduce the chances of mortality due to breast cancer.

I was astonished to know that there are a high number of women that die from breast cancer that are between 25-35, however mammograms are not given until you are 40!

My action: I decided based on this that I would like to promote this unit, and tomorrow I am going to go to speak to a doctor to buy a unit for his office.
